What EV charger installation costs in Markham
Published starting ranges so you can budget before you call. Your quote is fixed and includes the permit and inspection.
Simple install
$800 – $1,400
Panel close to the garage with spare capacity. Level 2 charger circuit, ESA permit and inspection included.
Smart load management (EVEMS)
$2,000 – $3,000
Tight 100A homes where a load manager lets you charge without a full service upgrade.
Detached garage / trenching
$3,000 – $6,000+
Underground feeder to a detached or rear-lane garage, common in newer Cornell-style layouts.
Why homeowners ask about the panel first
Many Markham homes are on 100A
A 40A-plus charger plus central air, an oven and a dryer can look like it needs a service upgrade. Often it does not.
Cheaper routes exist
Measured-demand calculations and EVEMS load managers can avoid a $4,500 to $7,000 upgrade when the numbers allow.
Honest recommendation
If you truly need the upgrade (heat pump, second EV, secondary suite) we will say so and quote it plainly.

Markham EV charger questions
Do I need an ESA permit to install an EV charger in Markham?
Yes. In Ontario any new EV charger circuit must be installed by a contractor licensed through the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) and registered with ECRA, who files a Notification of Work before starting. The work is inspected and you receive a Certificate of Acceptance. Permits and inspections in Markham go through the ESA, not city hall.
How much does EV charger installation cost in Markham?
Most simple installs run roughly $800 to $1,400. Longer runs, detached garages or smart load management cost more, up to $6,000+ for the most complex homes. You get a fixed written quote before work starts.
Do I need a panel upgrade for a Level 2 charger?
Not always. Many 100A homes can add a charger with a load manager (EVEMS) or, where the numbers allow, a load calculation based on measured demand instead of the conservative default. We check capacity first so you are never sold a service upgrade you do not need.
Who supplies electricity in Markham?
Most of Markham is served by Alectra Utilities. A few fringe areas are served by Hydro One, so check your bill. A new charger circuit does not normally need a separate utility application, but large service upgrades do involve the utility.
Are there rebates for home EV chargers in Markham?
The federal EVAP incentive applies to eligible vehicles, not chargers. Utility charger programs change often (for example Alectra has run waitlisted pilot programs), so we check what is currently open when we quote and tell you honestly if nothing applies.
How long does installation take?
The install itself is usually a few hours for a standard garage. Booking, permit filing and ESA inspection add a few days to a couple of weeks depending on inspector availability.
